A wonderful place to visit especially if you like the outdoors and castles. We have 4 more road trips around Scotland planned for the next 4 years. I have a bunch of timelapse of me driving to all these places I just need to edit the footage and post it!. The only thing about driving is you need to leave your instincts at the airport. Everything is the opposite of your instincts so the first day will be a little stressful. I also recommend starting in Inverness since its a smaller city that way you get the feel before you reach Edinburgh. If you do only fly into Edinburgh the airport is not is west of the city so you could stay at the Dalmahoy and take a cab to the royal mile. This is how we did it so no need to worry about parking just walks and wander around at your leisure. Then when you are ready to return just hail a cab. I used the app City Cabs (Edinburgh) app for travel. The reviews on the app are not great but I did not have any issues booking a cab through the app. The Hotel can also arrange the cab to get you to the Royal Mile and you can call a cab to get back. I just found the app easier maybe your experience will be different.
I hear lots of people that visit Scotland only see Edinburgh. Although Edinburgh is a beautiful city with lots to see you are missing out if you do not make it up into the highlands. The people are so friendly and the sites are spectacular. I would highly recommend using the road trip in the first post as a guide to finding your places of interest. Just around the Inverness area you will find castles, pubs, and some hiking in the countryside. Until next time happy travels to you.
